I remember the first time I saw Deastro, as the warmup for Manna &Quail a couple years ago. Back then it was just Randolph Chabot his synths and drum kit. He had so much energy, I was blown away. I kept seeing Deastro after, even putting him on my own showcase of bands. The more I saw Deastro, the more I got to know Randolph, full of integrity and fierce ambition. A kid that at this point in life deserves to a have a big ego and flaunt his accomplishments, instead, Randolph just pushes harder, deflating his ego by moving his band to the front and working harder with show after show. Deastro's got a new album out, Moondagger, that displays Randolph's growth as a singer and how he's worked his band into his compositions. Check out this video with Randloph as we sat down on a fantastic June night where Deastro played at the Crofoot in front of over 1,000 of their friends and family.

I've went to a few shows lately and my flip camera has been tagging along. That annoying guy with the small camera he keeps holding in your way - that's me, sorry! But, you reap the benefits. I'm getting the vidcasts down to a "relative" science between mixing in audio, some comments and video. This week's video features 2 of my favorite Detroit bands, Champions of Breakfast and Otto Vector, that just happened to be playing on the same night. Val and Moses from CoB share stories about their touring. Then, Ginseng and Renee from OV tell me about what OV is up to (sort of). The video is 8 minutes and should keep you amused until next week when I have a superduper Deastro video coming!

Each and every Friday, Phonotropic beings the freshest and most exciting bands on the local (and sometimes national scene) to Pontiac's Vernors Room located in the Crofoot. Phreddy, the crazy bearded guy, runs the event and makes sure there is always fun to be had. But, occasionally he hands over the wheel to people like me that can add a little something else to the charged atmosphere.
Sooooo, on Friday, June 26th I bring a night of Post Indie Sexy Synth Electro Dance! Or, as I like to refer to it "PISSED" music. I will be DJing along with my friend and DJ extraordinaire J. Celestino.
Best of all, Stereoluxxx, an indie-electro-funk duo will be playing Pontiac for the first time. Stereoluxxx is the band that has been called Pet Shop Boys meets TV on the Radio. What Does OMFGG Stand For?

There was a time when Mikel O.D. was also known as Mikel O.C., as in the O.C. TV show. You see, I love my teen dramas. Always have. Every since the old 90210 days when Brenda and Kelly tossed Dylan back and forth like a tennis ball. Meanwhile, Dylan just kept his smug smirk, and poor old David never got interesting until he started taking drugs. The love for the teen drama has never left me, but it has gotten harder these days to enjoy them like I use too. I suffered through this yearâs revamp of 90210, mostly out of a morbid fascination to witness just how bad this shabby also-ran could be.

My worst experience with teen drama was when I tried to watch Gossip Girl. This teen show was so purely aimed against my over 35 male demographic, there was no way I could hang with the catchy lingo, the high fashion and the oh so cold New York demeanor. Iâll stick with my sun in the fun 90210 and the forced intellectual chatter of Dawsonâs Creek.

But, something good did come of Gossip Girl and I picked it up for a $1.50 at a library sale a few days ago. OMFGG No. 1, which I looked at thinking this must stand for âOh My Freaking Great God!â actually stood for the âOriginal Music Featured on Gossip Girl.â This is a pretty brilliant soundtrack featuring artists like The Kills, The Teenagers, Crystal Castles etc. So it sounds like last yearâs hipper than thou mixtape.

I was told by a friend of mine that Gossip Girl has hit its stride this past season and I should give it another chance. Iâm not sure I will, but I will be listening to OMFGG!

The Show that Kicked '09 Off in Style!

The reason why I attend the Crofoot more than any other live venue is they understand not only how to put on a show, but, how to make it special. They proved this again on Friday night, June 5th with Mr. Sandmanâs Quadruple Album Release Prom, featuring The Summer Pledge, Manna And Quail, The Silent Years and Deastro. If youâre asking if Mr. Sandman is the next new promoter, the answer is no. Mr. Sandman, doesnât exist. Itâs just the fine people behind the Crofoot, doing their own thing to create a magical atmosphere full of fun and mischief.

I got to the show a bit late, which was really a shame because, The Summer Pledge were on stage making a beautiful racket, with loads of percussion, horns, and wailing guitars. Comprised of members from Wildcatting, the Summer Pledge, play some harsh indie rock with a dash of Americana and explosions. It was a big, awesome sound that left the crowdâs earâs ringing and their faceâs smiling.

Before I get on more with the how the bands were, I have to comment on how gorgeous the people were. See the crowd actually got it! I donât know how many shows I go to where the promoter will tell everyone to wear red - which I show up in head to toe, only to find everyone else in anything but red. The flyer for this show had âpromâ in the title and people dressed like it was the prom they really wanted to attend. With all the ladies in fantastic dresses, and the guys, well, you know, at least the ladies looked good. There was a booth to get your picture taken at, punch bowls and cookies on the bar and an âembarrassing momentsâ at your prom slide show.

Manna and Quail have been hard at work re-crafting their sound for a new ep which packed with 7 beauty-laden songs is like a full length with the fat chopped off. Having Dan Zott for special keyboard effects and vocal harmonies was a welcome back to some of the best M&Q moments, as this was one of their finest performances yet. If you want proof just check out the video, they manage to even sound good on my cheap flip camera.

Iâve used words to describe a live show by The Silent Years as âblissfulâ and âexhilarating.â They have a way of bringing something to the stage that could be called âspiritualâ for people like me, that question if we even have a soul to begin with. For tonightâs show they brought a cast of kids with them that sang, beat on drums and played guitar. They brought in cello to add to their violin and created lighting effects with lamps and Christmas bulbs. The bulk of their set came from their new ep, so absent were the singalongs like âSomeone To Keep us Warmâ and âOpen Up Our Eyes.â But, the new songs sound like winners, maybe next time Iâll be singing along with these as well. Check out their live performance of âOn Our Way Home.â

Deastro closed out the night. This show was his chance to bring what he brought to the UK just a couple of months ago to his home crowd. Randy (aka singer/synth of Deastro) is still the same lovable goofball we saw last year, throwing out stuffed animals, wrapping himself in a Batman sheet and pogoing around the stage as if his feet were ablaze. What is markedly different is how complete the Deastro sound has become with his full band that captures the sparkly synths and adds texture to space with a new focus on Randyâs vocal. Deastro may be our hometown kid on his way to making it the big time, but he still has a firm grasp on his identity and appreciation for his upbringing. To be able to witness Deastro up close, I traded in sound quality for capturing the moment. Check out the video of Deastro playing âGirl Talkâ âstyle as the crowd gets up on stage and dances ecstatically around him.

There couldnât have been a better show to have kicked off summer.

Being an independent comic artist at a comic convention is hard work that often goes unappreciated as people flock over to the B-movie stars or bargain bins, leaving out artists that pour their life into drawings and creating books that we relate to so much more than the superhero of the week. I'm still on vacation in Florida enjoying the weather and pool. My highlight of the week was visiting my brother Matt (see pic of us) who lives in Tampa. I read an entire novel, The Pledge by Rob Kean. It's one of the "hazing gone too far, weird fraternity rites" books. It's a page-turner, but a little too cliche for me. On this week's show I have another short video episode with Sex Ghost and Stereoluxxx. Both are local Detroit bands, comprised of two people that make oddly funky and moving music. I'll play a track by Stereoluxxx on an upcoming audio episode of MPAD.

On MPAD#178 I get back to an audio podcast with some great music and talk about job loss, a few podcasts and a terrific new album. As I mention on the podcast here is my review for 800Beloved's Bouquet.

800Beloved "Bouquet" Just the other day I was discussing with my friend how the instant access to the overflowing fountain of music has lead me to a lesser appreciation of it. When music today flows like water from a leaky tap, it's easier to leave the tap dripping. Why bother to even drink from it? It's better to just let it puddle on the floor and maybe some will manage to latch onto my pant cuff as I stumble through it on the way to take a leak.

Of course, just to prove I'm full of shit and like to pontificate fancy verbiage, an album like 800Beloved's Bouquet comes along and the water suddenly turns purple with a sugary, syrup taste coaxing me to lap it up like a man that hasn't had a good drink in ages. I could go through a breakdown on just how good each of Bouquet's 11 tracks are with moments that echo New Order with a shoegaze twist, but that would just an exercise in tedium as the whole album is glorious in it's decadent, rich darkness. It was a great Friday night at the Pike Room for MPAD Presents Neat Neat Neat. A good crowd turned out, the bands played excellent sets and the Sucker DJs played the hits. People were dancing, smiling and at least one person got embarrassingly drunk. The best part is I actually got some decent recordings from the show to share with you. Most of the crappiness lies in that I wasn't prepared for my interview with Gil Mantera's Party Dream. That's not to say I didn't know who GMPD was, I did, I just didn't ever feel relaxed asking them questions. I've been much less prepared for other interviews and had a better go at it. GMPD were nice enough guys, I just an awkward feeling with them I couldn't quite overcome. I also had a lot of problems getting a good recording. I use a Zoom H2 which usually works great, provided people speak loud enough to be picked up by the microphone. Quiet mumbling just doesn't make for a great recording.

While I may not be happy with the interview, the music is great. I play 2 tracks by GMDB and 1 track by Love Meets Lust. LML is headlining the show I am promoting Nov. 27th, so if you like what you hear come check it out.

Believe it or not this is take 3 on my show notes/blog for this episode! My first take on show notes didn't even have anything to do with the episode but more on that ridiculous pic of me and one of the members of Millionaires. (Ridiculous refers to the me part of the pic, Allison from Millionaires is fantastic).

On take one I had this brilliant, witty blog written that even made a point. Unfortunately, I got this problem with my blog editor that if I do a search on the same page I'm doing the blog on, I lose any text I put in for my blog. It's complicated, frustrating and only an idiot like me makes the mistake twice on the same day!

I'll be honest, for me, intellectual brilliance like I had written earlier today is few and far between and there's never a hope that I'm able to recapture it. So, all I can do is move on and tell you to enjoy the episode. It has an interview, a live review and shimmering, sparkly, electro-indie pop.

MPAD Video "Champions of Breakfast at Luna"

Friday night, Champions of Breakfast (CoB's) played Luna. Let's talk about Luna. Luna is a mainstay in Royal Oak, MI. It is a haven for people like me, that are over 30 (even 40) but still love to shake it to some of today's better alternative music and older music from the days when we maybe looked better on the dance floor. Another tribe at Luna is the "graduated from college but I can't stop the partying" crowd with threadbare college t-shirts, beers in each hand and loud girls in tow. It's a fun place that doesn't discriminate, but those that go usually know what they are in for.
This was CoB's first time in Luna, let alone their first time playing Luna. When I arrived they expressed they were a bit nervous how the crowd would react to their performance. After all, if you haven't seen a CoB show, what they do on stage can come as quite a shock. CoB were also the first of 3 bands playing that night, which means the crowd is still a bit reserved, calm and operating on too many brain cells which inhibit the body from really moving. Rather than just take the stage and get their part over with, CoB took their chance and stormed the stage in a flash of frenetic, flashy, high-powered glee. The audience reaction was a thoughtful chin-rub that moved to shake of a head and then wide smiles as arms were thrown up and people moved to floor and joined the party. They got it.
CoB proceeded to keep the up the pace with their onstage antics of donning glitter cloaks, plastic armor, fake wooden instruments and off-beat cover choices of "We Built This City..." and "Games People Play." Their choice cover of "Sean Me An Angel" was a clever godsend gift to an audience that remembered the song from their youth. CoB's original songs about video games, Dungeons and Dragons and mythological beings of lore were readily accepted. After all, who hasn't hadn't had a D&D basement party?
CoB ended the show with "Pegasus Ride (R U Ready)" which asks the question "are you ready?" and received a hearty reply back. They were indeed ready. If you looked hard enough, CoB could be found after they show,as they left their sweaty, majestic clothing behind for indiscriminate attire and glasses. They moved quietly through the crowd with the occasional nod and handshake. CoB's members, Val Hundreds and Moses Jackson pack it up and go home quietly to plan their next ambush. CoB's next show is February 2nd and 3rd playing with the similarly spastic Gil Mantera's Party Dream.

On MPAD#172 I review 2 documentaries I saw recently, Religulous and Kill Your Idols. Putting the episode together I discovered (as is usually the case) there was stuff I meant to mention but forgot. I don't want to let that stuff go to waste, so I'm going to slip it in this blog space and if I remember I'll mention it on my next episode. I played a clip from Lydia Lunch and she mentions loving the Dead Boys and how she got her name "Lydia Lunch." Well, hearing about her name, got me thinking about the song "I Need Lunch" by the Dead Boys. Now I know what Stiv Bators meant when he said he didn't need a cook but he still wanted lunch. That song is even meaner and dirtier than I originally thought. For the record, "Young, Loud and Snotty" is better than "Never Mind the Bullocks..." and I don't really care for much by Lydia Lunch but "Death Valley 69" is brilliant.

It's getting close to 2009, so I thought I would take this chance to show you some of the new directions I'll be moving towards next year. Most People Are DJs has always been my outlet to promote media and music that doesn't have mainstream recognition, but I think deserves wider attention. The subjects I choose are usually people like myself, that take on the DIY ethic of creating, marketing and releasing their product all on their own. Charlie Slick, the subject of this "MPAD Presents" video is a perfect example of a DIY artist with a clear vision of his wacky, dynamic artistry and why he does what he does. It's a 7 minute video taking live clips from some of Charlie's shows and an interview I conducted with him in September. It's a bit rough, but most of it was done with a Flip video camera and a primitive video editing program, proving anybody can do this.

With the movie Twilight opening (which you will not be getting a review from me on), the hit TV show True Blood (which I do review) and more, Vampires are back again with a vengeance. My question is, did they really ever go away? Unlike other horror icons, with their lust for (taking) life and zeal for evil doings, the Vampire continues to hold our interest.

Somewhere along the way I think I've lost my aging compass when it comes to music. Friends my age will tell me they don't like new bands because they can no longer relate to them and it isn't relevant to the life they currently lead. For me, music is as much about escapism as it is about wondering weather carries any relevance. I lead a mundane life. I like it that way, but I don't really need a band to remind me of it. What I need is a band that recaptures my youthful spirit by playing music that makes me what to shake off the lethargy that creeps in and settles on me because I've been thinking too much about paying dues and bills. Bands like the Medic Droid and Hyper Crush do that for me.

I can see the leaves beginning to turn color and the TV is getting turned on a bit more frequently. Fall is coming and with it comes new TV, new music and football. On MPAD#159 I'm playing some new music from a couple of folks that have risen back from the ashes of yesterday, Juliana Hatfield and Wayne Hussey. There's also local band the Silent Years. I saw them play last night and I have to say seeing them live is an almost spiritual event. In the middle are a couple of electro-pop/dance tracks that are very infectious. There's TV talk as I cover what I'm watching this fall, by the way, I watched 90210 last night and believe it or not, it's good! Reminds me of the old 90210 with a fresh spin. I should have mentioned that I'm watching the Shield and the first episode of it's last season was pretty great.

A couple friends of mine that are encyclopedic when it comes to music and myself have decided to start a DJ Crew called Sucker DJs. The unspoken mission of Sucker DJs will be to dispel the myth that all DJs have that "cooler than thou, untouchable" attitude. We're approachable, down to earth guys, playing music that strays away from tedium and repetition. We add flavor to the typical DJ set and we mean that literally.

Along with Jeff Milo, Tom Matich, and myself, as Sucker DJs we'll be playing indie, electro, soul, hip hop, etc. that will move your feet, make you grin and think things that are probably best left unsaid. This year's NME was held in Las Vegas which came with both good and bad things. The good things were there was tons to do, people to watch and maybe a chance to win some money. The bad was too many distractions, hard to focus on NME and easy to lose money. I was lucky to have share a room with two great Podcasters, Charles from Insomnia Radio SoCal and Steve from Geek Cred (check their shows out!) With those two, I always had a fun time and met lots of people they knew. On this episode, Charles and I did some poolside recording of our perceptions on the show. This is Part 1 of a 2 part episode: a video episode and an audio episode. Last night I got to check out the Art Fag DJ collective at Vernor's Room which was cool, but that isn't the point. I was told by friends that I should see the Hard Lessons, but all I heard was comparisons to the White Stripes who I am just not much of a fan for. But, I made my way over to see the Hard Lessons and they were BRILLIANT! Completely at the top of their game, rocking out like a national headliner and having friends from other bands join them on stage. They made me a believer and you'll hear them on MPAD real soon.

As for this week's episode, I split up the talk from the music. I have a 15 minute mix at the beginning that includes a demo from one of my favorite local bands, the Nice Device, then, the mix gets funky and trippy (where's that sample from?) leading to something from Girl Talk's latest (which you can download online). The talk covers the latest albums I've listened to, a new technology toy and some crazy song that's been driving me crazy! Enjoy.

So about three years ago I put out my first MPAD episode. I looked at the show as my way of spreading what I deem as good, under appreciated music and other artistic endeavors to an audience larger than the few friends I have been talking and playing this stuff to for years. Doing anything for 3 years on a consistent basis is significant. It's even more significant when you can point to results and events that make the work worthwhile. I can point to friends that I've made, the listeners that I have and events that have made the last 3 years special enough to keep doing this crazy new media show. This week's episode is a typical show with a few new bands I've come across with great songs and some banter about the event I DJ'd (well, sort of) over the weekend.

I didn't say it on the episode so let me put it here: Happy Father's Day! Rather than play music and do the usual MPAD episode, on this episode I talk with Lee Bushman, the Marketing Director at Iron Core Entertainment (ICE), a film company that is currently working on the Sci-Fi webvideo series "Terra". "Terra" is an ambitious, science fiction show that takes place in the not too distant future. I'd tell you more but I'd rather you listen to the episode and hear it from Lee. ICE are looking for extras and people that like to have a good time, if you're interested check this event out. If you create music ICE are also looking for music to contribute to their show. This weekend in Detroit is Motor City Comic Con and I've been getting back into the world of comics, largely through great indie efforts like American Born Chinese. Part of the purpose of Most People Are DJs, besides playing great indie music, is to showcase people that are using their talent to produce (mostly)independent works of art, whether it's music. films, novels or comics that I think deserve more exposure. On this episode, I have an interview with Fred Chao, the writer and artist for "Johnny Hiro - Half Asian All Hero", a great comic that combines "slice of life" commentary with Japanese history and non-stop action. I've been talking about doing 2 different episodes lately, a video and a "music in a foreign langauge" episode. I'm still working on that music in a foreign langauge episoide, but I did do a video episode for this week's MPAD. The video is 2 different clips, the first one is an interview of DJ Ice Cold Chrissy, with his music playing underneath it with video from his set and photos. It's still in what I like to call "guerilla" editing style. The second video is from Electric President and it's neat little video that looks like it took a while to assemble. The show's about 9 minutes show so you shouldn't get too bored.

I mentioned the weather last week so I may as well update you, today it's freezing rain and slick conditions. I almost slipped getting my paper this morning! I went to shows both Friday and Saturday night, so today I'm truly calling it a day of rest. I noticed that for the past couple of weeks I got away from playing the quirky, synth driven stuff I've identified MPAD with, so this week it's back with a vengeance. I'm also pulling out a couple of surprises.

Besides what on episode, here's what else is going on:

800Beloved warmed up for A Place to Bury Strangers and played a brillinat set, they may have an electronic ep up this week so stay on their path.

If you like horror then you have to listen to Dread Media, a great horror podcast that is similar to Sci-Fi Dig but for fans of horror. I had an email of mine read on a previous episode.

A Knight Rider for 2008 is on tonight and the Spice Girls sold out the Palace. We've retread so much from the recent past that we're really digging the bottom of the barrel.

The wind is kicking hard today and it's about 10 below zero F when you factor that in. but, I'm going to keep warm today by having the fireplace on and playing some good music. Judging by the music alone, this is probably one of my best episodes. Four of tracks come from bands that are playing a show on Saturday, Feb. 16 at the Crofoot. The slide show above is from a couple of recent shows that I've attended. I even got to announce Crashing Cairo (thanks Wax!) on stage at one of the shows.

Before I get into the show notes, here's a couple of things I meant to mention but left out:

Mojo did a 3 hour radio show on and with Gary Numan, it was a radio stream, but if you search hard enough you can find an MP3 file of it (or you can email me).

I've been reading the Captain America Omnibus for the past couple of weeks and I have to say this may be the best comic storyline I've ever read. The pacing, the characters, plots and subplots are so well told that even though I know what lies ahead, reading it unfold, I never get the sense this was done as sensationalism (see One More Day).

Lost is finally back on and I can't say I'm immediately hooked, but, maybe a listen to the Ekobase podast will help.

800Beloved is playing the Magic Stick on Friday with A Place to Bury Strangers, if you missed them at the MPAD Showcase here's your chance to see their incredible live show. I'll probably cover this on next week's show.

Today I Still Feel Pretty Sweet

I can't recall the song off the top of my head, but the Hold Steady have a line that goes "I still feel pretty sweet." And, even with a lack of sleep, sore shoulders from carry everything and a pounding headache, I still feel pretty sweet. If you missed it, last night was my MPAD Showcase: Synth, Shoegaze, Surprize! and while I have a long list of "lessons learned" I think the event went extremely well.
My first "lesson learned" was never pick the coldest day of the year to have a show! The temp was somewhere in the subzero area with wind gusting. So the 110 people (which is a pretty good crowd) we had in the Pike Room braved the elements to see the show.

Let's start with the artroom. J. Celestino, Shawn Amberger, Paul Sizer and Marvin Shaouni had work on display. This photo contains work by J. Celestino. Everyone really like the artwork, and a couple of the artists sold a few of their works making the evening especially good for them.

Get this guy offstage so we can here some music! I had this crazy idea to emcee the night, so before the bands took the stage I came on and introduced them, while giving away PodShow t-shirts and other swag. It was fun and I hope it added a bit to the evening.

Deastro was the first to play.He threw out a blistering set of frantically paced, energetic, synth-bliss, that those unfamilar with Deastro came away with smiles and an appreciation for spastic dancing.

Otto Vector played next and were nice enough to play a couple of songs, they don't usually perform "Ponderance of a Lonely Girl on a Porch" being one of them, Their sound was especially tight and Renee's vocals were spot on. For one of the early bands, they got quite a reaction from the crowd with some dancing and lots of cheering.
Ether Aura was third on the list, and this was a good time to relax a bit to the ethereal sweetness of Kate, the lead singer's voice. They have a video on their MySpace page from their performance you need to see!

Lastly, 800Beloved took the stage and got everyone to their feet with one of those "it will go down in history" performances. I've never heard a band play so loud and sound so clear at the same time. Their set was shimmering with guitar effects, wonderful vocals and bouncing basslines. Their cover of the Rolling Stones (by way of the Sundays) "Wild Horses" brought a hush then a loud sheer from the audience. Their set ended with the crowd joining them on stage dancing. A moment I regrettably missed. If anyone has pictures from this part of the show please contact me!

I think the best thing for me about the show was everybody seemed to have a very good time. There was a sense of friendliness and a nice shrugging off the "ultra cool to hip to relate" attitude I enounter at a lot of shows. The show took a lot out of me to put on, but, looking back on it, it was worth every moment. Thanks to the bands, artists and friends that participated. It was really you that made the show a night I'll treasure.

It was a chilly, snowy night last week when I tracked out to to see Maritime at the Pike Room in Pontiac. I'll be honest and say the warm up bands, one who I never got the name of and the One AM Radio were not very exciting. However, when Maritime took the stage the played a blistering set of of songs, with many of the highlights from their latest album, "Heresy and the Hotel Choir." The guitar interplay between Davey and Dan was incredible, the songs live have a bit more of an edge that really got the crowd going. Over the last couple of months I've seen a lot of shows and spoken with a lot of bands. This week I got a chance to see and speak with one of my favorite bands, the Hold Steady. It's always a tricky things interviewing a band on the night they play, there's noise, the bands could be distracted with playing that night (as they should) and it's a game of wait and see if the band has time to be interviewed. Luckily, Tad Kubler and Craig Finn from the Hold Steady were great guys to welcome me give me a few minutes of their time. On this episode I play the interviews along with some special music from the Hold Steady, a track from Art Brut who is also played that night. I also play the Mobius band and Mason Proper who play mater this week in Pontiac.

The Hold Steady Are Almost Too Good!

On Monday night the Hold Steady came to town and the show is still playing in my head. The show was held at the excellant new club in Pontiac, the Crofoot Ballroom.With a line-up that included the hipper-than-hip Art Brut and the loud rocking, Federale, I expected this show to be great, but, this show was insanely good. I'll talk about it on my upcoming podcast, but I had to tell anyone else that has a chance to see this show get your tickets. You won't see a better show this year. Art Brut's stage set included a movie screen that listed the band's set and had humorous comments to go along with their talky, sing-along songs. Eddie Argos, the lead singer (which is really stretching the term) explains his life through bitterly funny pop-punk songs. The Hold Steady played a set that was full of their boozey anthems of misguided youth, while the crowd sang along and held up their beer bottles at every mention of alcohol - which was a few times every song. Craig Finn looked absolutely giddy on stage as he sang his songs and recognized the appreciation and satisfaction from the audience hearing it. During the last song, which is always "Killer Parties," all hell broke loose as the audience began climbing up on stage, hugging the band, waving arms and singing along (see pic.) I think the bouncer considered putting a stop to it but there was just too many kids rushing at the stage to share a moment with the band that absolutely thrilled them. On my next show, I talk to Tad Kubler, the guitarist and Craig Finn, the singer of Hold Steady play a couple of their tracks and Art Brut.

MPAD#115 "MC Chris, The Hourly Radio and Friends"

This week's MPAD is a mish mash of differerent bands/artists and friends I've talked with lately. First up, there's the rapid-fire, hilarious MC Chris who warmed up for Pinback, I also play them opn this episode. I interview, from Dallas, TX, the Hourly Radio, a great alternative rock band that warmed up for IAMX, and, yeah, I play them as well. I missed the Henry Rollins spoken word show, but my firend, Aaron for Weeklk Anime Review filled me in on what I missed. And, last but cetainly not least, Matt from Digital Detroit Radio and I chat about a couple of shows he's seen the past month.

I've been getting out too much!

If I get out of the house for an evening of fun more than twice a month I consider myself lucky. This month I've been hanging out at night like I won the lottery! October started out with the Birthday Massacre show. Then, last week I saw a great show with MC Chris and Pinback. A couple of days ago I saw 30 Days of Night with Rob from Supernot. Last night, Matt from DDR and I saw IAMX and I interviewed the warmup band, the Hourly Radio.
To cap off the month on Oct. 29th I'm saving the best for last and seeing the Hold Steady with Art Brut at the Crofoot. The great thing is I get to share all this stuff with you! 30 Days of Night is reviewed on Supernot#29.The next episode of MPAD will have an interview with MC Chris (that him in the pic) and the Hourly Radio.

North to South not Note to Self - You Idiot!

Soooo, at the end of my last episode MPAD#112 I comment how the beginning lyrics of Bloc Party's "Hellacopter" with "Note to Self" is a great way to start a song. Well, apparently, I'm giving Bloc Party too much credit, he actually sings "North to South" in the beginning. I was listening again and caught it, looked it up and what do you know, I'm an idiot! The good news is "Note to Self" is still available as a great song opening!

And, for something completely different, on my other podcast Supernot, my co-host Rob and I switch the format up and talk about all things "geek-chic". In other words, we cover DVD releases, the latest TV episodes and comics. Check it out if it sounds like something you'd like.

The Birthday Massacre Killed Last Night

I saw the Birthday Massacre last night and they put on quite a show. Chibi, the lead singer was very expressive, with a pixie grin then a devilish snarl. The set list was a good selection from all three of their releases. A number of the songs came from their latest release, "Walking With Strangers," which has been on repeat in my car all week. I interviewed the band before the show so look for them to be featured on MPAD in about a week and a half, with pics, music and even video.

I'm sure I'll get some flack for this, but Starship Troopers is one of my favorite movies of all time. Seriously. I love the propaganda look and feel for the film. It reminds me of Frank Miller's "Dark Knight Returns," it's a great use of irony. Some people don't get this, but, watching this move after 9-1-1 is interesting. And, thinking back to the start of the Iraq war, a lot of scary parallels between the world of S.T. and ours can be made.
S.T. is set in a very fascist world, where serving for the military is the highest of honors.
The teens in this movie are portrayed as pretty, naive and vacuous. They're gung-ho about going into space and killing bugs, until they realize they're like lambs being sent in for the slaughter. Even after seeing several of their own gruesomely taken down they continue their gusto for war.
Director, Paul Verhoven, maybe stays too close to the irony, in that many people fail to see he is intentionally glorifying the fascism and war, so we can see beyond the surface. Beyond the surface is a mindless bunch of kids and a world that is going get it's shit kicked in.

MPAD#100 "Three for Talking!"

The Wire - Season 1
I was glued to season 4 during Christmas Vacation and I think I watched some of season 1. It was on sale for $24.99 at Best Buy - how can I pass that up?

Marilyn Manson - Eat Me Drink Me
I'll probably talk about this one on my next show - why am I so drawn to this repulsive dude? It's probably because he's one of the few artists that continually push the boundaries of what's acceptable. I've only given a cursory listen to the first few tracks, but, so far I'm a little disappointed. Seems a little bland, but I don't want to speak to soon.

So, give this a listen, Young Love is doing a nice cover of the Smashing Pumpkins' 1979.

Exciting news! I'm part of the PodShow Sirius block on Sirius Satellite Radio. The show airs this Tuesday, I'm on at 8:30pm eastern between A Girl A Guy and a Bottle and Yeast Radio. It will be a short best of recent episodes featuring Gary Numan, Hamell on Trial and the Nice Device. There are a couple of new surprises on this show so you'll want to hear it. During this weeks podcast, MPAD#63, I'll tell you a way you can get this special show without having Sirius.
