Mikel O.D. - mostpeoplearedjs's Podcast - mostpeoplearedjs's Podcast

On this “enhanced” podcast I am going to give you the lowdown on some bands I took in at a show a week ago.

Here’s the Soundcloud soundtrack for the episode which includes songs by Wolf Sega featuring Lemon, Painted Palms, ASTR and more.

The first band I cover is the Front Bottoms who are from New Jersey and play a sort of friendly punk with acoustic guitar and horns. Their songs have witty lyrics about surreal moments in life that we can all relate to, (who hasn’t been stoned and put into the front seat of a car?) They have a very energetic live show that includes stage diving and shouting along with the chorus. The pictures and video of the Front Bottoms was taken from the balcony at the Crofoot. I didn’t used my DSLR for most of the shots as I was leaning over the balcony and was afraid I might drop it.
The next band covered is Gates, also from New Jersey, but different because they play, loud-quiet-loud music. Gates was a great band to watch as they all jumped around as they played and were very emotional. In the pictures you can see a couple of really good action shots I took of the guitarist. The final band profiled is City Lights and I make the distinction between them and City Light which is another band I really like. City Lights is a pop punk band from Ohio that sing inspired, rowdy anthems that make me young and ready to do something important, that is, until the song is over. My last topic is the ICE T Final Level podcast which just had its first episode a couple weeks ago. Ice T talks about whatever is on his mind is his “in your face” way which makes for an amusing listen. Throughout the episode, if you listen real closely you can hear music relating to each of the bands I talk about. I hope you enjoy this episode and all the different parts to it as it takes a lot more time to put together besides the 10 minutes of audio that I recorded. If you have feedback on the episode you can email me at mostpeoplearedjs@gmail.com.

Last month I took in this tremendous little festival called Electro Future Fest which featured bands I’ve had on MPAD in the past like Flashclash and Deastro. There were a few other bands playing, one of them being Sugar Baron. I actually heard a song by Sugar Baron a few days before that on Flashclash Radio, only I didn’t knw it was Sugar Baron, I just knew I liked the song and needed to look into who it was by. Well, flash forward a few days later and there they are on stage at St. Andrews as one of the early bands on for the festival. I really dug their sound with fun, dancing rhythms fronted by strong vocals that made it pretty original stuff. I watched them unload their equipment then approached their lead singer Jan to let them know I enjoyed their set. We got talking a bit and I figured this would make a good video and set about talking with him further outside. Since the festival I’ve listened to their entire album “Sharon is Karen” which besides being a clever as hell album title is an excellent listen. On the video Jan talks about the formation of the band, their album, touring and a small surprise explanation at the end about his amazing dreadlocks.

Back at the end of May I went to Movement – Detroit’s mega electronic music festival with a press pass. I took pics of great DJs and the crowd. One of the more interesting people I took a picture of was Ghetto Vader. Dressed as if a graffiti artist used Darth Vader as his canvas, Ghetto Vader was strolling around the VIP area passing out his latest CD. I pulled him over to a chair and started talking with him about his motivation behind his outfit and got some intriguing details. This video is a few snippets of Ghetto Vader on his dress, philosophy and music. You can find out more about Ghetto Vader here.

It has been a little over a month since my last MPAD video. I took about a month off to recalibrate and think about the direction MPAD is headed. While this video is similar to my others I am working on some new ideas and changes. So while your looking forward for what is to come enjoy this video with DJ Erno the Inferno. Erno is one of my favorite DJs to experience. His sets are always an enjoyable set of dance, house and even some throwback disco. The audio from this video was taken from a phone interview I did with Erno a few months ago just after he played a set warming up for James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem. You can read my post from the interview here. The video is from the James Murphy show and a set he did with Disclosure in April. I'll be back with another MPAD video is a couple weeks.

This episode features Milk’n’Cookies, DJ brothers from Chicago that pulled off a fantastic DJ set in February at Elektricity. I featured in an earlier MPAD video M’n’C back in October 2012. For this episode I interviewed the brothers from their Dodge Charger before their set. Some of the topics we talk about is if they get nervous before a show, their DJing process and how they communicate while performing. Watching M’n’C perform is seeing twin brothers having their ultimate party playing out before their eyes as they dance, tradeoff manning the decks and toast the frenzied crowd. M’n’ C recently released a new track “Ghosts“ on their Soundcloud page which you can also download. M’n’C will be back at Elektricity on April 19 warming up for Showtek.

On this week’s video I talk with Matt the lead singer and synth player in Toronto’s up and coming band Young Empires. Young Empires have been compared to bands like the Killers and Foals. They have a fresh danceable and catchy sound that should easily find its way on the radio or your favorite CW show. We spoke before their show at Detroit’s infamous “the Shelter”. Their set that night was a rousing performance of songs from there ep and even included a couple surprises. From watching Young Empires and listening to their music I believe these guys have what it takes to get noticed.

This episode features Jim Smith who as the artist Teeel crafts synth and atmospheric music with 80's influences. This video is taken from a show in October of 2012 when Teeel played Detroit. In the video Teeel talks about where the name from, his love for 80's music and how he performs live. Teeel has two albums out: Amulet and University Heights, he's working a new record which he also talks about at the end of the video. Besides making music as Teeel, Jim also runs Synth Records a terrific label specializing in synthpop.

If you want to hear more from Teeel you can hear the entire interview on my new podcast Digital Racket.

This week’s video is with Showtek, a hard electronic duo from the Netherlands. I caught up with them at the Identity Fest last July and realized I still had not used the footage. It was cool hanging with Showtek on their tour bus, they were very chill and drinking tea. When they performed their set they were completely different as the energy kicked in and they performed a rowdy and uplifting set. In the interview the Showtek guys explain how they have evolved their sound over the years to widen the electronic landscape they draw from. They tell me how it’s great the scene from the U.S. is so diverse and accepting of different musical styles. Showtek have several dozen releases out you can get on eMusic and Beatport, they also have several collaborations with other electronic artists. They’re coming back to the U.S. and playing Michigan on April 19.

Back in December Araabmuzik played Elektricity with night filled with hip hop beeps and blips. One of the DJs that came along for the tour was DJ Zebofrom Chicago. It was DJ Zebo who coined the title of the tour “Trap to the Future” from his mixtape series. Until this tour and talking with DJ Zebo I had not heard much about “trap” music. You’ll have to watch the video to get DJ Zebo’s explanation for trap, because I won’t do it justice here. What’s interesting is since hearing about trap that night I’ve come across it in internet articles several times. We did this interview in the early a.m. hours in a tucked away spot in Elektricity, so the lighting is a bit dark. DJ Zebo’s been back to town recently and he’s going to continue to be a DJ I’ll keep tabs on. On a side note, Araabmuzik’s career has really taken off the past few months where I’ve seen him play on Jimmy Fallon with A$AP Rocky and other high profile shows.

We’re at the end of January and dipping our toes into February so I thought I’d do a little review video of a couple of shows I took in recently. James Murphy from LCD Soundsystem played a DJ set at the Crofoot when he spun vinyl house late on Saturday night. I was there taking photos of JM and the crowd which was a mix of older hipsters and younger clubbers. Savoy, a 3-piece electronic outfit from Brooklyn played a few nights later at the Pike Room. Savoy came with a laser show that added some brilliant effects to the night. The crowd this night was a younger blend of dubstep and dance fans. I wrap up the video with a short review of Tarantino’s DJango Unchained and the overall disappointing wrap-up of American Horror Story.
