Royal Oak Music Theatre held another stellar dubstep show Friday night. K@dog started the night with his downtempo set of electronic music sprinkled with some high energy moments that was a preview of the onslaught of sound to come.
Big Gigantic, the headliner of the night, took the stage with the duo playing in large cylinder columns housing them and their instruments. Unlike other dubstep artists, Big Gigantic bring something special to their sound with their main instruments being saxophone and drums. The sax and drums played an even larger part of their show with their thematic songs that build up and sustain themselves with jazz-inspired sections that kept the crowd dancing the entire night.
Lastly, I cannot blog about a dubstep show without including about the spectacularly dressed and energetic crowd. The crowd for this night was what might be best described as "intergalactic hippie dress" with shiny clothes with a mock rasta-touch. Here's a slideshow my entire set of pics from the show.

This week's episode is a profile of local dubstep DJ and friend of mine, K@Dog, which is pronounced "CAT DOG". I saw K@Dog warm up a few weeks ago for Paper Diamond and while his set was something completely different for the night his set worked perfectly. His downtempo, reggae inspired mix got the night started out right as the crowd mingled and felt the night start to pick up at a more relaxed pace. K@Dog has played extensively through Michigan and often plays sets along electronic acts that are not necessarily dupstep. I took a few photos that are spread out throughout the 3 minute video. The Detroit dubstep scene continues to be an exciting and diverse experience that never disappoints. On this week’s audio podcast, I’m talking about podcasts, catching you up on what’s going on with my podcast and the news of what went down at Mevio the past couple weeks. You won’t notice too much of a change to the state of my show, but you may want to pay attention to other Mevio podcasts, especially if they are audio podcasts. While I’m on the subject of podcasting, I decide to roll with it and mention other podcasts I am listening to and the genres of podcasts that I am currently enjoying. A few of the podcasts I mention are Chris Gore's PodCrash, 5 by 5 movie podcast and Jay Mohr Stories. The Facebook podcast group I talk about is the Independent Podcast Alliance. In my last segment I review to podcasts that now have TV spinoffs the Nerdist on BBC America and Kevin Smith’s Comic Book Men which premiered this week on AMC. The music I play this week is in the electro-pop and dubstep genres. songs: Low-fi -The Evidence of a Missing Link |

A few months ago I discovered the band Hussle Club as a warm up act for a Peter Murphy show. Hussle Club is fronted by Prince Terrence who has previously played drums for a number of bands including Santogold. Prince Terrence is from Detroit so the interview was kind of like a going home celebration for him. While Hussle Club are still finding their sound, from there ep, they are off to a strong start. Their songs range from dark rock tracks to more upbeat dance. My podcast affiliate for this episode is 4inkjets.com where you can save 10% when you use the coupon code MOST.
