Sun, 25 October 2009 ![]() Next week, Halloween, one of my favorite holidays is coming. It's a holiday that lasts the whole month. It gives me an excuse to watch scary movies, sit around because it's raining outside and wear a silly costume. I know I've slacked off on putting out podcasts, but I'm not going to lie and say that's going to change, I'm just saying when I get a chance to do an episode I'll do one. This episode I cover a few things like - talking about the Psychedelic Furs and the Happy Mondays, songs that make movies better than they really are and the upcoming Creepy Halloween Party at the Crofoot. music: Electric Tickle Machine - Blew It again Echo and the Bunnymen - Life of 1,000 Crimes Tim Rutili - Dreamless from The Lost Neon Indian - Terminally Chill mentions: Crime and Punishment In Suburbia Creepy Cheapy Halloween Treat - watch the video! Sun, 27 September 2009 ![]() What's that they say? "It's better late than never" (which it was beginning to feel like). Welcome to the 200th episode of Most People Are DJs, I've been putting out these podcast episodes for over four years and I'm not sure how many other podcasts I can name that have made it to 200 episodes before fading away. With Most People Are DJs, as long as I keep to subjects I like and have something say about them, I don't see an end in sight. On this episode, I do what I usually do and play indie pop with bit of pop culture talk, but the songs are special because they are by bands I've met along the way of doing my show and they've become my friends. music: Deastro - Spritle Any Day In June - Feathers Champions of Breakfast - Nasy Bunz Charlie Slick - Too Busy for Love Eat Sugar - Pop Singer from "It's Not Our Responsibility" Bank Heist "Bells Ring On" mentions: TV (listen to the Big Red Podcast) Football (listen to ESPN Football Today) be my friend at www.facebook.com/mikel.od.pfeiffer bumpers: Sponsors: mostpeople10 - save 10% any order $50 or more mostpeople12 - save 12% any order $75 or more GoDaddy! new Codes! Tue, 11 August 2009 The last time I spoke to Robert Wax was February of 2008. Seems like yesterday, but Wax has been up to a lot of new things and on MPAD#197 he spills the beans on his acting career that has taken off, and what his band, Crashing Cairo has been doing. Wax tells some great stories about some of the famous people he's bumped into at his acting gigs. After doing a few weeks of MPAD video episodes I decided I had a few things on my mind and an MPAD audio episode was due. This episode I catch you up on what I've been up to, a friend that I've made and a new track by an old band. I also talk about the documentary, Heckler, which explains what a Heckler is and how the definition has expanded to bolggers and critics. Wed, 20 May 2009 ![]() I spent last weekend at Motor City Comic Con and had a great time buying some hardcover trades and talking to the artists. Being an independent comic artist at a comic convention is hard work that often goes unappreciated as people flock over to the B-movie stars or bargain bins, leaving out artists that pour their life into drawings and creating books that we relate to so much more than the superhero of the week. On this episode I interview three such comic artists that also have a connection to DJing. Enjoy the episode and check out the work the guys do because it's really great stuff. So maybe I'm going overboard with this, but on this episode of MPAD, I have the full interview with the Pains of Being Pure at Heart. Two weeks ago I played a track from them, last week was the video, this week is the interview. What can I say? PoBPAH is one of my favorite bands of 2009. During the interview they also mentioned 2 bands that I play this episode that are new finds for me - Girls and the Manhattan Love Suicides. The Motor City Comic Con is this weekend with lots of great guests and artists so be sure to come out! Mon, 30 March 2009 I'm still planning on doing an MPAD episode this week, but I thought I would throw in a little surprise to the MPAD feed.
Welcome to the first episode of MiFilmCast! While I've been doing Most People Are DJs for over 3 years, starting this show felt like I have never done a podcast before. It's because the film scene is so new to me, which makes it just that much more exciting and nerve wracking! I hope you'll excuse the awkwardness as I'll get more comfortable as I go along. This episode features an interview with filmmaker, Dan McGowan, as talks about the Michigan Movie Networking Event at the Crofoot on Sat. Tue, 17 March 2009 On MPAD#178 I get back to an audio podcast with some great music and talk about job loss, a few podcasts and a terrific new album. As I mention on the podcast here is my review for 800Beloved's Bouquet.
Of course, just to prove I'm full of shit and like to pontificate fancy verbiage, an album like 800Beloved's Bouquet comes along and the water suddenly turns purple with a sugary, syrup taste coaxing me to lap it up like a man that hasn't had a good drink in ages. I could go through a breakdown on just how good each of Bouquet's 11 tracks are with moments that echo New Order with a shoegaze twist, but that would just an exercise in tedium as the whole album is glorious in it's decadent, rich darkness. Mon, 9 February 2009 ![]() I had my reservations about putting this episode out, it's not one of my best. But, I'll leave you to be the judge of it. Most of the crappiness lies in that I wasn't prepared for my interview with Gil Mantera's Party Dream. That's not to say I didn't know who GMPD was, I did, I just didn't ever feel relaxed asking them questions. I've been much less prepared for other interviews and had a better go at it. GMPD were nice enough guys, I just an awkward feeling with them I couldn't quite overcome. I also had a lot of problems getting a good recording. I use a Zoom H2 which usually works great, provided people speak loud enough to be picked up by the microphone. Quiet mumbling just doesn't make for a great recording. While I may not be happy with the interview, the music is great. I play 2 tracks by GMDB and 1 track by Love Meets Lust. LML is headlining the show I am promoting Nov. 27th, so if you like what you hear come check it out. On take one I had this brilliant, witty blog written that even made a point. Unfortunately, I got this problem with my blog editor that if I do a search on the same page I'm doing the blog on, I lose any text I put in for my blog. It's complicated, frustrating and only an idiot like me makes the mistake twice on the same day! I'll be honest, for me, intellectual brilliance like I had written earlier today is few and far between and there's never a hope that I'm able to recapture it. So, all I can do is move on and tell you to enjoy the episode. It has an interview, a live review and shimmering, sparkly, electro-indie pop.

Tue, 20 January 2009 ![]() On MPAD#172 I review 2 documentaries I saw recently, Religulous and Kill Your Idols. Putting the episode together I discovered (as is usually the case) there was stuff I meant to mention but forgot. I don't want to let that stuff go to waste, so I'm going to slip it in this blog space and if I remember I'll mention it on my next episode. I played a clip from Lydia Lunch and she mentions loving the Dead Boys and how she got her name "Lydia Lunch." Well, hearing about her name, got me thinking about the song "I Need Lunch" by the Dead Boys. Now I know what Stiv Bators meant when he said he didn't need a cook but he still wanted lunch. That song is even meaner and dirtier than I originally thought. For the record, "Young, Loud and Snotty" is better than "Never Mind the Bullocks..." and I don't really care for much by Lydia Lunch but "Death Valley 69" is brilliant. music - Dolphin City - Old Romance Passion Pit - Sleepyhead Bell - Brown Bear The Do - Tammy Jesus Chainsaw Massacre - Dance Dance Dance (Lykki Li remix/cover) reviews - mentions - sponsors -35 free tracks for eMusic Membership Petco - save on Pet supplies More at Mevio Offers! Sun, 23 November 2008 ![]() Somewhere along the way I think I've lost my aging compass when it comes to music. Friends my age will tell me they don't like new bands because they can no longer relate to them and it isn't relevant to the life they currently lead. For me, music is as much about escapism as it is about wondering weather carries any relevance. I lead a mundane life. I like it that way, but I don't really need a band to remind me of it. What I need is a band that recaptures my youthful spirit by playing music that makes me what to shake off the lethargy that creeps in and settles on me because I've been thinking too much about paying dues and bills. Bands like the Medic Droid and Hyper Crush do that for me. On this episode I play six tracks, I talk to the bands Medic Droid and Hyper Crush, and review the live show. With Wall Street falling apart at the seams, the economy not getting any better and my wallet taking a beating, I need to inject some humor in my life. The songs on this week's show should put a few smiles on your face, they are a little silly, but I wouldn't call them "novelty" songs. music: Champions of Breakfast - When Trolls Roam the Earth (check out their cover of Send Me An Angel) Bell Hollow - Copper Crayon (Project Jenny Project Jan Remix) Project Jenny Project Jan - 320 EsQuire - Spin the Bottle (watch his video on the left!) mentions: Click here to Download the Show!

Sun, 7 September 2008 ![]() I can see the leaves beginning to turn color and the TV is getting turned on a bit more frequently. Fall is coming and with it comes new TV, new music and football. On MPAD#159 I'm playing some new music from a couple of folks that have risen back from the ashes of yesterday, Juliana Hatfield and Wayne Hussey. There's also local band the Silent Years. I saw them play last night and I have to say seeing them live is an almost spiritual event. In the middle are a couple of electro-pop/dance tracks that are very infectious. There's TV talk as I cover what I'm watching this fall, by the way, I watched 90210 last night and believe it or not, it's good! Reminds me of the old 90210 with a fresh spin. I should have mentioned that I'm watching the Shield and the first episode of it's last season was pretty great. music - Juliana Hatfield, Richard Butler This Lonely Love (feat. Wed, 27 August 2008 ![]() A couple friends of mine that are encyclopedic when it comes to music and myself have decided to start a DJ Crew called Sucker DJs. The unspoken mission of Sucker DJs will be to dispel the myth that all DJs have that "cooler than thou, untouchable" attitude. We're approachable, down to earth guys, playing music that strays away from tedium and repetition. We add flavor to the typical DJ set and we mean that literally. Along with Jeff Milo, Tom Matich, and myself, as Sucker DJs we'll be playing indie, electro, soul, hip hop, etc. that will move your feet, make you grin and think things that are probably best left unsaid. We'll be playing as part of Encore, a big bash at the Crofoot on Friday, Aug. 29th. Yeah, its approaching fast... In celebration of the Pontiac's Arts Beats and Eats Festival I'm playing local bands that will be performing there or nearby soon. These are local artists that need to be heard nationally. music: the Hard Lessons - See and Be Scene Deastro - The Green Harbor Silver Ghost - Bad Blood Javelins - Flowers Zoos of Berlin - Below the Old House Little Plastic Stars - The Sound of Velver Crushing mentions: What We Do Is Secret - the Germs DocuDrama sponsors: Go to Go Daddy! use the code DJ3 for a webiste domain for only $6.95 a year! Wed, 20 August 2008 ![]() This year's NME was held in Las Vegas which came with both good and bad things. The good things were there was tons to do, people to watch and maybe a chance to win some money. The bad was too many distractions, hard to focus on NME and easy to lose money. I was lucky to have share a room with two great Podcasters, Charles from Insomnia Radio SoCal and Steve from Geek Cred (check their shows out!) With those two, I always had a fun time and met lots of people they knew. On this episode, Charles and I did some poolside recording of our perceptions on the show. Sun, 27 July 2008 ![]() Last night I got to check out the Art Fag DJ collective at Vernor's Room which was cool, but that isn't the point. I was told by friends that I should see the Hard Lessons, but all I heard was comparisons to the White Stripes who I am just not much of a fan for. But, I made my way over to see the Hard Lessons and they were BRILLIANT! Completely at the top of their game, rocking out like a national headliner and having friends from other bands join them on stage. They made me a believer and you'll hear them on MPAD real soon. As for this week's episode, I split up the talk from the music. I have a 15 minute mix at the beginning that includes a demo from one of my favorite local bands, the Nice Device, then, the mix gets funky and trippy (where's that sample from?) leading to something from Girl Talk's latest (which you can download online). The talk covers the latest albums I've listened to, a new technology toy and some crazy song that's been driving me crazy! Sun, 20 July 2008 ![]() I think this is my first "author" interview episode. John Sellers is the author of "Perfect From Now On: How Indie Music Saved My Life" and has also contributed articles to Spin, GQ, The New York Times and more. He's an obsessive music fan that I could spend countless hours at a bar arguing over which Smiths song is best or which bands should really reunite. Our conversation is an hour and includes 2 tracks and underscored by some of the best music from the 80's, 90's and even a few from today. music: Guided By Voices Over the Neptune/Mesh Gear Fox from Propeller Jeremy Warmsley Temptation mentions: Too many bands to document sponsors:Sign up for Mevio's Superpanel and the chance to win great prizes! Sun, 13 July 2008 ![]() Message line 206-279-4725 website - www.mostpeoplearedjs.com So about three years ago I put out my first MPAD episode. I looked at the show as my way of spreading what I deem as good, under appreciated music and other artistic endeavors to an audience larger than the few friends I have been talking and playing this stuff to for years. Doing anything for 3 years on a consistent basis is significant. It's even more significant when you can point to results and events that make the work worthwhile. I can point to friends that I've made, the listeners that I have and events that have made the last 3 years special enough to keep doing this crazy new media show. This week's episode is a typical show with a few new bands I've come across with great songs and some banter about the event I DJ'd (well, sort of) over the weekend. music: The Errors - Dance Music Why - The Hollows Belle Luna - Blissful Escape from "Abstrated Visions" The LK - Never Mind Your Idols from Eardrums "Summers Here" compiliation download it here! Sun, 6 July 2008 I hope everyone is having a great 4th of July weekend! As I sit here with a sunburn on my face of all places, I'm trying to hide from the sun. In celebration of Indendence Day, I am interviewing an independent artist that pushes the limits of life and music, Dan Diamond. His songs such as Titty Dancer and Bad Habits uncover the seedy lifestyle we normally watch and cheer on from the bleacher seats. Always enjoying the view but never sure if we'd want trade places. Sun, 1 June 2008 Welcome to June, despite the cost of gas, I think this is going to be a great summer, lots of good shows, a couple festivals and sun. Thanks to the podcast I'm getting involved with things I've always wanted to do - like DJ a show and be part of the process of making a record. There's even more than that, but I don't want to speak too soon, so you'll learn more about that on upcoming MPAD episodes. On this episode, the music is a lighter than last week, with a bit of power pop thrown in. The comic supplied for this page is from Dave LaPlante's Joe Pop, check it out.

Sun, 11 May 2008 This episode features two interviews from a couple of bands I've played recently and I think really deserve your attention. First up, from Brooklyn, NY, Bell Hollow, 4 guys and a girl that combine to make some beautifully textured rock music that calls back on some of the great 80's bands like the Chameleons and the Sound. Second, I interview PlayRadioPlay, from Texas, who is really just one guy that makes awesome synth-pop with an "emo-like" edge to it. I start things off with a new track by NIN that is available for free and is an awesome listen.

I mentioned the weather last week so I may as well update you, today it's freezing rain and slick conditions. I almost slipped getting my paper this morning! I went to shows both Friday and Saturday night, so today I'm truly calling it a day of rest. I noticed that for the past couple of weeks I got away from playing the quirky, synth driven stuff I've identified MPAD with, so this week it's back with a vengeance. I'm also pulling out a couple of surprises. Besides what on episode, here's what else is going on: 800Beloved warmed up for A Place to Bury Strangers and played a brillinat set, they may have an electronic ep up this week so stay on their path. If you like horror then you have to listen to Dread Media, a great horror podcast that is similar to Sci-Fi Dig but for fans of horror. I had an email of mine read on a previous episode. A Knight Rider for 2008 is on tonight and the Spice Girls sold out the Palace. We've retread so much from the recent past that we're really digging the bottom of the barrel. Sun, 10 February 2008 The wind is kicking hard today and it's about 10 below zero F when you factor that in. but, I'm going to keep warm today by having the fireplace on and playing some good music. Judging by the music alone, this is probably one of my best episodes. Four of tracks come from bands that are playing a show on Saturday, Feb. 16 at the Crofoot. The slide show above is from a couple of recent shows that I've attended. I even got to announce Crashing Cairo (thanks Wax!) on stage at one of the shows.
Before I get into the show notes, here's a couple of things I meant to mention but left out: Mojo did a 3 hour radio show on and with Gary Numan, it was a radio stream, but if you search hard enough you can find an MP3 file of it (or you can email me). I've been reading the Captain America Omnibus for the past couple of weeks and I have to say this may be the best comic storyline I've ever read. The pacing, the characters, plots and subplots are so well told that even though I know what lies ahead, reading it unfold, I never get the sense this was done as sensationalism (see One More Day). Lost is finally back on and I can't say I'm immediately hooked, but, maybe a listen to the Ekobase podast will help. 800Beloved is playing the Magic Stick on Friday with A Place to Bury Strangers, if you missed them at the MPAD Showcase here's your chance to see their incredible live show. I'll probably cover this on next week's show. On with the notes from the show: music: The Dead Bodies "Total Destruction" Us vs. Her "In My Pocket" Bob Mould "The Silence Between Us" for PMN Wild Sweet Orange "Wrestle With God" Chase Pagan "Walzting In the Sky" The Great Fiction "Paleego" Manna and Quail "Honestly" Background music: Jon Kennedy 110% Proof (mp3) Demons (mp3)Buy at eMusicmentions: Ok_computer compilation from Mojo Magazine The M&Q show that you need to attend if you're anywhere near the area! sponsor: Get a web domain from Go Daddy for only $6.95 a year when you use the code DJ3

Sun, 16 December 2007 It was a chilly, snowy night last week when I tracked out to to see Maritime at the Pike Room in Pontiac. I'll be honest and say the warm up bands, one who I never got the name of and the One AM Radio were not very exciting. However, when Maritime took the stage the played a blistering set of of songs, with many of the highlights from their latest album, "Heresy and the Hotel Choir." The guitar interplay between Davey and Dan was incredible, the songs live have a bit more of an edge that really got the crowd going. I interviewed Davey and Dan (Dider) from Maritime before the show, this episode features the interview, music from Maritime and more.

Over the last couple of months I've seen a lot of shows and spoken with a lot of bands. This week I got a chance to see and speak with one of my favorite bands, the Hold Steady. It's always a tricky things interviewing a band on the night they play, there's noise, the bands could be distracted with playing that night (as they should) and it's a game of wait and see if the band has time to be interviewed. Luckily, Tad Kubler and Craig Finn from the Hold Steady were great guys to welcome me give me a few minutes of their time. I'm still planning on doing an MPAD episode this week, but I thought I would throw in a little surprise to the MPAD feed.

800Beloved "Bouquet"
It was a great Friday night at the Pike Room for MPAD Presents Neat Neat Neat. A good crowd turned out, the bands played excellent sets and the Sucker DJs played the hits. People were dancing, smiling and at least one person got embarrassingly drunk. The best part is I actually got some decent recordings from the show to share with you. If you were there, you can relive the night and if you weren't, you can hear what you missed. Next week I have video coming!
As I try to get all my stuff done for the show this Friday I've made this a short episode. But that doesn't mean it isn't packed full of great stuff for you. I'm playing songs by each of the bands playing at

Welcome to June, despite the cost of gas, I think this is going to be a great summer, lots of good shows, a couple festivals and sun. There's even more than that, but I don't want to speak too soon, so you'll learn more about that on upcoming MPAD episodes. On this episode, the music is a lighter than last week, with a bit of power pop thrown in. The comic supplied for this page is from Dave LaPlante's

I'll get back to some interviews soon but this episode is me playing music that keeps me smiling. A little less synth, a lot more guitar jangle on this one. I listened to a lot of podcasts this week so I mention 2 that rose above the others and I tell you about a rock-n-roll comic that I'm currently reading. By the way (did you notice I spelled that out - I am not a lazy blogger!), while I may not have a beard, I am a little scruffy this morning. Maybe I should give that "Don Johnson" look a spin.
If you're not laughing at this cover, show it to your parents, they'll find it hysterical! I crack up everytime I look at it.

The wind is kicking hard today and it's about 10 below zero F when you factor that in. but, I'm going to keep warm today by having the fireplace on and playing some good music. Judging by the music alone, this is probably one of my best episodes. Four of tracks come from bands that are playing a show on Saturday, Feb. 16 at

Happy Holidays! Brought to you by Myxer and Go Daddy, on this episode I feature some indie holiday tracks. I also have a sneak peek at one of the bands that will be playing at the MPAD Showcase, 800Beloved. There's talk about great free stuff on the intermet and more.
It was a chilly, snowy night last week when I tracked out to to see

In the episode I have an interview with fun-loving, occasionally scary band,

The first 3 Ingreedyance mix - not much talking and good music!

I use this episode on MPAD to promote my new podcast "

It's a couple of weeks before Christmas and what am I doing telling you about stuff I've bought. Why am I buying stuff for me so close to Christmas? I guess I can't resist a good deal.
Last week's episode ran a bit longer, so this one is shorterer. Not much talk, but the music's really good.
It's another packed episode with a ton of links -

This interview with Brett Weaver took place at
Happy Halloween - back to a regular MPAD show with indie music and reviews.

This episode I spend the entire time with my new friend, Brad Winderbaum. The man behind the amazing vidcast,
"I wear black on the outside cause black is how I feel on the inside,

Back to a regular show with 4 tracks and commentary. This show covers a lot genres of music -- dark goth, punky techno, and power pop.
Warning! This is not a typical Most People Are DJs Episode. This is my 50th episode celebration - a mix cd for the summer for my MPAD listeners. There are 3 files to this episode - The Summer Jam Parts I and II and the compilers commentary track for the third file. All the files fit neatly on 80 minute blank CDR - so burn and enjoy! And, thanks for sticking around..

It’s 2006 do you know what your L.I.G.'s (Liberal Indie Geeks) are listening to? Hopefully, it’s this episode of Most People Are DJs where I review the Comedians of Comedy, and comics like the 13th Son and Hulk vs. Wolverine. I also play music by MC Paul Barman, Suicide Sports Club and Delta 5.
