This episode features Milk’n’Cookies, DJ brothers from Chicago that pulled off a fantastic DJ set in February at Elektricity. I featured in an earlier MPAD video M’n’C back in October 2012. For this episode I interviewed the brothers from their Dodge Charger before their set. Some of the topics we talk about is if they get nervous before a show, their DJing process and how they communicate while performing. Watching M’n’C perform is seeing twin brothers having their ultimate party playing out before their eyes as they dance, tradeoff manning the decks and toast the frenzied crowd. M’n’ C recently released a new track “Ghosts“ on their Soundcloud page which you can also download. M’n’C will be back at Elektricity on April 19 warming up for Showtek.

On this week’s video I talk with Matt the lead singer and synth player in Toronto’s up and coming band Young Empires. Young Empires have been compared to bands like the Killers and Foals. They have a fresh danceable and catchy sound that should easily find its way on the radio or your favorite CW show. We spoke before their show at Detroit’s infamous “the Shelter”. Their set that night was a rousing performance of songs from there ep and even included a couple surprises. From watching Young Empires and listening to their music I believe these guys have what it takes to get noticed.

This episode features Jim Smith who as the artist Teeel crafts synth and atmospheric music with 80's influences. This video is taken from a show in October of 2012 when Teeel played Detroit. In the video Teeel talks about where the name from, his love for 80's music and how he performs live. Teeel has two albums out: Amulet and University Heights, he's working a new record which he also talks about at the end of the video. Besides making music as Teeel, Jim also runs Synth Records a terrific label specializing in synthpop.

If you want to hear more from Teeel you can hear the entire interview on my new podcast Digital Racket.

This week’s video is with Showtek, a hard electronic duo from the Netherlands. I caught up with them at the Identity Fest last July and realized I still had not used the footage. It was cool hanging with Showtek on their tour bus, they were very chill and drinking tea. When they performed their set they were completely different as the energy kicked in and they performed a rowdy and uplifting set. In the interview the Showtek guys explain how they have evolved their sound over the years to widen the electronic landscape they draw from. They tell me how it’s great the scene from the U.S. is so diverse and accepting of different musical styles. Showtek have several dozen releases out you can get on eMusic and Beatport, they also have several collaborations with other electronic artists. They’re coming back to the U.S. and playing Michigan on April 19.

Back in December Araabmuzik played Elektricity with night filled with hip hop beeps and blips. One of the DJs that came along for the tour was DJ Zebofrom Chicago. It was DJ Zebo who coined the title of the tour “Trap to the Future” from his mixtape series. Until this tour and talking with DJ Zebo I had not heard much about “trap” music. You’ll have to watch the video to get DJ Zebo’s explanation for trap, because I won’t do it justice here. What’s interesting is since hearing about trap that night I’ve come across it in internet articles several times. We did this interview in the early a.m. hours in a tucked away spot in Elektricity, so the lighting is a bit dark. DJ Zebo’s been back to town recently and he’s going to continue to be a DJ I’ll keep tabs on. On a side note, Araabmuzik’s career has really taken off the past few months where I’ve seen him play on Jimmy Fallon with A$AP Rocky and other high profile shows.

We’re at the end of January and dipping our toes into February so I thought I’d do a little review video of a couple of shows I took in recently. James Murphy from LCD Soundsystem played a DJ set at the Crofoot when he spun vinyl house late on Saturday night. I was there taking photos of JM and the crowd which was a mix of older hipsters and younger clubbers. Savoy, a 3-piece electronic outfit from Brooklyn played a few nights later at the Pike Room. Savoy came with a laser show that added some brilliant effects to the night. The crowd this night was a younger blend of dubstep and dance fans. I wrap up the video with a short review of Tarantino’s DJango Unchained and the overall disappointing wrap-up of American Horror Story.

No I didn’t misspell anything in the title of this episode. There does indeed exist a Flint Eastwood in the form of an up and coming band from Detroit that’s been making quite a buzz in the area with their exhilarating live performances. The lead singer is Jax and she explains on the video how they got their name and details on their upcoming ep. The live performance footage was taken from the Crofoot on November 24 when they played as an opening band for MC Lars and I Fight Dragons. They will be doing some small tours through some nearby states so seek Flint Eastwood out as they have a great indie rock sound backed by ferocious energy.

A couple days after Christmas my friend and hip hop artist, Robo-Robb, put on “Interplanetary Holidays” an event with hip hop artists for his label Hi Hill Recordings. I thought it would be fun that night to put together a video with a few of the artists about their accomplishments in 2012 and what they are looking forward to in 2013. This video features the ever-versatile Robo-Robb who, in addition to hosting the event, did a little of his own hip hop and rap. The other artist is Drew32 and his MC friend, B-Smooth, a local up and coming hip hop artist that has played with Gym Class Heroes and his current video for “I Am King” is making waves on Vevo. This was the first time I’ve seen Drew32 play with a backing band which brought full-on intensity to his performance. Enjoy the first MPAD video of 2013! .

I decided to do something a bit different this time around with my show and put together both an audio and video podcast for my final episode of the year. Each version has something different to offer: the audio has the songs in their complete length and I have a part three where I cover my favorite TV in 2012; the video has pictures and video of what I'm talking about and more "hidden" details. I'm thinking about doing this routinely next year but I didn't realize how much more work it would be. But, for an end of year special I should be giving you something more so here you go.

For my year-end this show highlights my record of the year with Fur's "Image on the Reverse," and my favorite band to see liveThe Smiths United.I also talk about some special people I interviewed this year.

One of the bands I have tracked along with this podcast through the years is The Birthday Massacre. Lead singer Chibi is one of the nicest people I have interviewed. The show from the interview is the third time I have seen them perform, I catch them every time they play. The place was so crowded this night I had a tough time taking photos or video through the throngs of fans that were reaching out to the band while dancing and singing along. The new album from TBM is Hide and Seek on Metropolis Records, the songs are the usual blistering goth rock with some electronics but there's also a polish over the songs that points to their ongoing evolution. On the show I talk with Chibi about the tour, their latest record, a book she's written and how she has been recovering since having vocal surgery.
